Luís Simões submits goals to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
13 Jun, 2023

In 2022, Luís Simões covered over 120 million kilometers, delivering a total of 8 million tons of consumer goods, beverages, personal hygiene products, healthcare items, and other sectors.

At Luís Simões, we are building the future step by step.

Committed to creating value in the Supply Chain from the very beginning, we are now reinforcing our commitment to carbon reduction through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This initiative allows us to align our energy efficiency initiatives in the transportation and logistics sectors with science and the Paris Agreement.

After joining the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2021, Luís Simões spent the last year developing its greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets for its activity in the Iberian Peninsula until 2032, in partnership with the consulting firm Get2C. Get2C is the company that coordinated Portugal’s National Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality 2050.

Cláudia Simões, Sustainable Development Coordinator at Luís Simões, explains that “this path led us to a deep analysis to understand our real carbon impact in our value chain, with broad stakeholder involvement. This is the starting point for a journey where we all stand to gain: companies, society, and the planet.”

Luís Simões’ greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets were submitted in May 2023, based on the latest climate science, awaiting approval. Its short-term goals are consistent with the ambition to limit global warming to 1.5°C in the case of scope 1 and 2 emissions and well below 2°C for scope 3 emissions.

Catarina Vazão, Partner at Get2C, explains that “joining an initiative like SBTi is increasingly important in a context where the number of participating companies is exponentially growing, and the urgency to act will determine the competitiveness of the business fabric.”

What is SBTi?

SBTi is an initiative resulting from a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It encourages the establishment of emission reduction targets based on science as a way to advance the transition to a low-carbon economy and ensure the fulfillment of the Paris Agreement. Currently, more than 5,000 companies worldwide are committed to SBTi, and about half of them have had their targets approved.
