Luis Simões strengthens its fleet with new Gigaliners

Luis Simões has strengthened its fleet with the acquisition of two new gigaliners. This investment is part of the company’s commitment to promoting a more sustainable logistical future, as these vehicles allow for the transportation of a larger cargo volume using fewer resources, significantly reducing the environmental impact of operations.

This transportation model has allowed Luís Simões to reduce up to 25% of greenhouse gas emissions per ton transported.

LS was a pioneer in its sustainable use at the Iberian level, acquiring the first gigaliners in 2014. Since then, they have been expanding their fleet, which now includes 15 units, and widely adopting their use with the goal of promoting an efficient and more environmentally responsible logistics solution.

These new vehicles will connect Luís Simões’ logistics centers in the Porto and Lisbon regions around the clock and are assigned to the distribution of food products and other goods. It is expected that these new vehicles will cover more than one million kilometers.

The units have a total length of 25.25 meters and consist of a traction unit, a connecting trailer, and a semi-trailer. The cargo area is organized into two heights, which allows for optimal utilization of all the space. Furthermore, the connecting trailer and the semi-trailer of one of the units have a controlled temperature system, ensuring the cold chain during transportation.

In total, each of these vehicles has a capacity for a load of 38 tons and 102 Euro pallets.

“A gigaliner is an interesting logistical option for many customers and services. First, because it allows for a reduction in the number of trips due to its significantly higher load capacity, thereby increasing operational efficiency. Second, because it helps them achieve sustainability goals,” explains José Luís Lourenço, Distribution Director of Luís Simões for Portugal.

The use of these two gigaliners replaces three conventional tractor-trailer sets, resulting in increased efficiency and a reduction in emissions and road wear.

“Working in the logistics sector requires being at the forefront of change. Society’s needs and, in parallel, those of our customers, are continually evolving. There is a widespread interest in promoting a more environmentally responsible model, and technology is the key to achieving it. At Luís Simões, we strongly invest in innovation with the aim of remaining active contributors to the future of logistics,” concludes José Luís Lourenço.
